India has introduced the concept of Unique Identification Number for all its citizens. It will help the government to pass on the appropriate benefits and services in a seamless and efficient manner to them. Such unique number technology can be seen in developed countries like United States of America where it is called Social Security Number. Indian government has also decided to adopt UIN (Unique Identification Technology) to upgrade its old technology and introduce a new age digitised service to boost its development efforts for all its citizens.

Aadhaar is a 12 digit identification number given to every citizen of India based on their biometric and demographic data. The 12 digit number will be unique for every individual. The Aadhaar number is being issued and managed by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India).

Prior to the enactment of the Act, the UIDAI functioned, since 28 January 2009, as an attached office of the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog). On 3 March, 2016 a money bill was introduced in the Parliament to give legislative backing to Aadhaar. On 11 March, 2016 the Aadhaar Act, 2016, was passed in the Lok Sabha. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was established under the provisions of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 on 12 July, 2016 by the Indian Government.

Aadhaar Card Details Aadhaar Card comprises of details about the person enrolled in it. Some details are printed on the card while other are encrypted and stored in a QR code for security purposes and can be accessed only through authorised channels.

Aadhaar Card Benefits

Pan Card & Income tax – Aadhaar card will help to control black money in the country when it’s linked with the pan card. It will also help in curbing income tax frauds thus, generating money for the government for the development of the country.

Identity Card – Aadhaar card can be used for identity purposes at various government and private institutions.

How to Get the Aadhaar Card?

Getting an Aadhaar card is very easy. All you need to do is enrol in the Aadhaar system by visiting an enrolment centre near your residence or to any Aadhaar centre anywhere in India. Enrolment in Aadhaar is totally free of cost.

Fill the form – You will need to fill the Aadhaar application form providing basic details about yourself like name, age, gender, residential address, etc., and submit supporting document to verification.

Photograph and Biometric Data Collection – A photograph of the applicant will be captured and biometric data will be collected. These details will get stored in the secure UIDAI database.

Acknowledgement Slip – After completion of your enrolment you will be issued with an acknowledgement slip verifying your enrolment.

Issue of Aadhaar Card – In a few days’ time the UIDAI system will issue your unique Aadhaar number and card once the verification checks of the documents submitted has been completed.

Eligibility Criteria for Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar Card for Resident Indians – As per the Aadhaar Act, 2016, only an Indian citizen who has resided in India for a duration of 182 days or more in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of application for enrolment.

Aadhaar Card for Minors – UIDAI is issuing Blue Colour Aadhaar (Namely Bal Aadhaar) for children in the age group of 0 to 5 Years. After the age of 5 years, the child will need to get his/her demographic and biometric details updated against same Aadhaar Number by visiting nearest Enrolment Centre.

Aadhaar for Foreigners – Foreigners who are residing in India are eligible to apply for Aadhaar card if they satisfy the period of stay as per the Aadhaar act, 2016.

Documents Required for Aadhaar Card

Proof of identity and proof of address will be required for enrolment. The list of acceptable documents are:

  • Election Photo ID card
  • Ration Card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • PAN Card

You can also submit the following documents for address proof if the address is not mentioned on the ID card. The below documents should be less than 3 months old.

  • Water Bill
  • Electricity Bill
  • Landline Telephone Bill

If you don’t have the above proofs, then you can also avail the following documents for proof of ID and address:

  • Certificate of Identity having photo issued by Gazetted Officer/Tehsildar on letterhead can also be accepted as Proof of Identity.
  • Certificate of Address having photo issued by MP or MLA /Gazetted Officer/Tehsildar on letterhead or by Village Panchayat head or its equivalent authority (for rural areas) is accepted as valid Proof of Address.
